Description: Brookside Women’s Medical Center DBA Austin Women’s Health Center is seeking a full-time (35-40 hours per week) Center Assistant to join our team at 1902 S IH 35, Austin, Texas 78704.
Requirements: The position requires that, at a minimum, applicants be:
- Pro-choice, passionate about women’s health and reproductive rights, flexible and energetic,
- Have a Bachelor’s degree or at least one year of experience in a medical setting,
- Have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills,
- Currently, CPR is certified by either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish in a Medical Setting.
- The Center Assistant should be patient, focused, and have a warm and pleasant character with plenty of empathy. The Center Assistant works directly with a wide variety of patients and must be personable, courteous, and have good communication skills, including the ability to deal with patients who may be anxious or fearful. Our office can be very busy so the ability to multitask and work efficiently is very important. Ideal candidates will be positive, flexible, compassionate, empathetic, and dedicated to providing excellent patient care.
- The Center Assistant is responsible for excelling in the areas of Laboratory Technician, MD Assist, Pathology Technician, and Session Assist.
- The Center Assistant will begin by training in one or two areas and eventually complete training in all areas below.
Responsibilities:
- Lab Technician runs the laboratory where patient testing occurs. Primary duties include:
- collecting blood samples
- running tests
- taking vital signs
- serving as a point of patient education regarding test results and what they mean
- MD Assist assists the Physician during gynecology/surgical procedures. Primary duties include:
- supporting and comforting patients during procedures
- supporting and assisting the Physician during procedures
- cleaning and stocking rooms
- assisting the Physician with ultrasound examinations
- Pathology Technician runs the pathology lab under the supervision of the Medical Director and the doctor practicing at the time. Primary duties include:
- Cleaning and sterilizing instruments
- Session Assist consists of preparing patients for gynecology visits. Primary duties include:
- preparing exam rooms for patients
- cleaning and stocking rooms
- showing patients to the exam rooms before the doctor enters and helping them feel as comfortable as possible.
- starting IVs
- keeping track of the session—who has been seen, who has not, anticipating the “flow” of patients

Primary Duties:
- Post-operative recovery of surgical patients
- Assisting MD with gynecology/surgical procedures
- Setup of gynecology patients for procedures
- Administering narcotic medications as directed by the Provider.
- Monitoring patients undergoing anesthesia services.
- Drawing up narcotic medications before surgical sessions
- Monitoring post-operative patients in our Recovery Room.
- Managing and maintaining daily and central narcotic logs
- Managing and maintaining Complication Logs
- Updating the Medical Emergency Protocols and educating staff on changes
- Performing follow-up exams
- Triage of Post-Op phone calls
- Utilizing and updating/managing patient education resources and written materials
- Leadership and management of medical staff during emergency situations
- Planning and organizing a yearly Emergency In-service for medical staff
- Gives injections and draws blood; assists with OB/GYN exams and office procedures as needed; and provides other patient care services as directed by the physicians.
- Contributes to the development of policies and procedures.
- Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
- Serving as a point of patient education regarding test results and what they mean
- Contact patient pharmacies to ensure proper medication dosages are dispensed or to clarify any missed information.
- Compiles and condenses technical and statistical data for reports and records.
- Experience with performing early pregnancy ultrasounds.
- Experience with Lab tracking and follow-up lab care.
