At Austin Women’s Health Center, we provide post-abortion follow-up appointments.
Post-abortion care may not always be necessary. If you have had a surgical abortion or medical abortion using Mifepristone and Misoprostol with no complications, a follow-up appointment is not required but can offer emotional support and reassurance in a safe and private environment.

What Happens at a Post-Abortion Care Follow-Up Appointment?
At an abortion follow-up appointment, we may address any of the following based on your needs.
- Assess your recovery and ask about any symptoms following your abortion
- Review pertinent medical history
- Refer you to any necessary care
- Provide a physical exam addressing any concerns
- Offer contraceptive options
Contraceptive Counseling
At AWHC, we offer a range of contraceptive options, including all types of birth control pills, diaphragms, vaginal rings, Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs) such as an IUD, birth control implant, the shot, and tubal ligation.
Contraceptive counseling includes your options, side effects, and the efficacy of specific methods. We utilize a person-centered approach—your values and priorities come first!
We will determine which option is best for you and offer same-day IUD insertion on the day of your follow-up. If you’re interested in an IUD, make sure to let us know when scheduling your follow-up so we can accommodate you.
If you’ve already started a contraceptive method, we will go over your comfort and satisfaction with the method you are on.
Is a Follow-Up Appointment Right for Me?
A follow-up appointment offers patient-centered care after an abortion. You don’t need a medical reason or complication to come in for a follow-up. Our pro-choice staff is highly specialized in meeting patients exactly where they are following an abortion.
It can feel supportive to establish pro-choice care near home and there when you need it.
When to Schedule A Post-Abortion Care Follow-Up
You can schedule your post-abortion follow-up as early as one week following your medical or surgical abortion.
*While we cannot provide abortions at this time due to Texas law, we still refer patients out of state and can help provide resources for funding and travel expenses.
